The VA Install Hybrid OR System project is an excellent example of key members on the proposed design team working together. The Spees Design Build team was contracted to provide preliminary survey, construction documents and construction administrative services to renovate approximately 1,770 SF in an existing operating room and adjacent spaces. The renovation converts the existing operating room into a Hybrid OR in which both endovascular and invasive procedures can be performed.

The Hybrid OR provides access to modern, minimally invasive cardiothoracic, urologic, neurosurgical and vascular surgery services to replace typical catheter-based procedures. Advanced, robotic imaging technology is provided by a Siemens ARTIS pheno system. Surgical equipment and light booms are ceiling-mounted and a Stryker-designed lighting system was also implemented for this project.

Based on the requirements in the VA Surgical and Endovascular Design Guide, a coherent floor plan was designed to accommodate the requirements of all necessary equipment and their clearance zones. The new hybrid suite includes a hybrid OR, adjacent control room, and an equipment room. Modifications include the removal and installation of walls, and flooring and ceiling finishes to accommodate the new hybrid OR design layout. New finishes match adjacent existing finishes and color schemes in the hallway and clean core.

The existing Housekeeping Aids Closet (HAC) was renovated to accommodate access without having to enter the clean core and the a clean supplies room was added. During the renovation, the existing, adjacent dark and light room were updated to equipment storage for surgical support equipment. This project complies with all applicable VA program guides, design guides, requirements and standards.
